Released on May 19, 2010, “The Bad Shepherd’ is a response to the torrential allegations of pedophilia against the Catholic Church. The project is a visual representation of the contradiction stemming from the heights of hypocrisy reached by Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican, for direct involvement in the facility and concealment of the abuse and terror of unknown thousands of children.

By contrasting childhood iconography and colour with images of censorship, incarceration and sexual deviance, Rushton Phillips disrobes the Pope of the reverence of his vestments and suggests the caricature to which the Holy See has been reduced. The artist joins Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens' campaign to end the diplomatic immunity which the Vatican has claimed protects the Pope from any responsibility, and hold him accountable for the Church's complicity in these execrable crimes.

The artwork has become part of Sam Harris' Project Reason, via it's online gallery: www.project-reason.org
